  Medical Alarms (9)
Medical Alarms or Medical Alert devices usually come in the form of a bracelet, key chain, or pendant. When the button is pressed on these devices they trigger an emergency console hooked up to your phone line. Once triggered that console immediately calls the Medical Alarm company which is monitored 24 hours a day 7 days a week or an emergency number preprogrammed such as a relative or an emergency service. Medical Alarms are waterproof thus never requiring the individual to remove the device.

A Medical Alarms can be leased, rented monthly, or paid for out right with a onetime fee. Medical Alarms can help save lives and give loved ones peace of mind. The companies and products on this page are some of the leaders in the industry.

Thank you for choosing American Medical Alarms. We provide a medical alarm system for individuals to use during a medical emergency if they are unable to reach their telephone.

There is nothing more disheartening than receiving calls from people telling us about someone they loved that needed help but couldn’t get to a telephone so nobody knew about it…and nobody came to their rescue.

None of us want to be, or want someone we love to be, in a situation where we need help but for whatever reason can’t get to a telephone to call for help. With our personal emergency response system you can have peace of mind that you or someone you love can get help from anywhere in their home with just the push of a button.

Our medical alarm is very simple to use. In an emergency you simply press the button on the pendant or wristband you are wearing which sends a medical alert to our monitoring center. Within moments you will be speaking with our operator regardless of where you are in your home and help will be on the way.

You also have the option of requesting that we call a nearby friend or family member if you do not believe that your medical emergency requires paramedic attention. For example, if you have fallen and are not able to get up you could ask our operator to call someone on your contact list to assist you.

We want to make sure that you or someone you love gets the help they need, at the same time maintaining their independence and continuing to live in their own home worry free.

American Medical Alarms is now pleased to offer commercial accounts.

There are several types of medical alarms.

Depending on your needs, they can differ drastically in terms of price, service, and how they work. When choosing a medical alarm you must first look at the company and the services they provide. How reliable is their equipment? Do they offer 24 hr assistance? How fast is their response? These are just a few of the questions you have to ask yourself before determining what service to go with.

Most medical alarms or Personal Emergency Response Systems (Pers) are connected to your existing phone line with a special 2 way monitoring device or control box. The console uses a very loud speaker and sensitive microphone so you'll be able to be heard wherever you are in the house. Most alarms feature a wireless, single button, water proof, device (normally you have a choice between a necklace or wrist strap) that interacts with the console when help is needed. The control box, located near the telephone, will immediately call or notify (when the emergency button is pressed) a trained professional who returns the call to the patient or contacts the appropriate parties. If there is no answer, help will be dispatched. Depending on the situation, a friend, relative or ambulance is summoned. Medical alarms are great for expecting mothers, the elderly, handicapped, or diabetic patients.

There are also medical alarms that can be attached to your existing burglar or security alarm. If you have an existing alarm we suggest contacting your service company to see if they provide a medical alarm as well. Keep in mind that in this situation you'll have to verify how reliable their service is since they do not specialize in medical emergencies (however maybe they do). Make sure to ask.

Questions to ask when purchasing a medical alarm service.

How fast is the response?

Does the console have a rechargeable battery?

Is the console attached to your existing phone line?

What if the phone is busy during an emergency?

Is the wireless transmitter waterproof?

Is there a guarantee on parts, labor, and services? How far can the transmitter communicate with the console?

What is the monthly fee?

How is the response team trained?

Any other charges. Setup, Activation, or Termination Fees?

How reliable is the response teams equipment, computer systems?

Lifeline now offers a needs assessment questionnaire to help determine if it’s time to use an emergency personal response system to ensure the safety and independence of your family’s elder loved ones.

FRAMINGHAM, MA (PRWEB) July 20, 2005 – Knowing whether it’s safe for an older family member to continue to live alone isn’t any easy decision to make. What will happen if they fall – or feel threatened by some other age-related medical condition and can’t reach the telephone to call for help? Lifeline Systems, Inc., the leading provider of medical alarm services in the United States and Canada, has developed a 9-point needs assessment questionnaire to be used as a guide to evaluate if and when a parent or loved one may need a medical alarm in order to maintain their independence.

The interactive quiz is available at the website www.timeforamedicalalarm.com. Caregivers are directed to answer nine questions with a yes or no response. Questions asked include their loved one’s overall health, existing health problems or concerns, recent hospitalization, time home alone, use of assistive devices, medication, and their ability to handle day-to-day grooming and care. The results are tallied and then give the caregiver information as to whether a medical alarm is an urgent need, elevated need, moderate need, or limited need.

Lifeline Systems has been the leading provider of personal medical alert response services in the United States for over 30 years. Lifeline is the preferred provider of medical alarm services to members of the Visiting Nurses Associations of America, and to thousands of leading doctors and hospitals. In addition, the Lifeline service is available through select chapters of the American Red Cross.

“Lifeline System’s new site www.timeforamedicalalarm.com is extremely useful for caregivers and homebound elderly patients who are trying to assess their need for a medical alarm,” says Carolyn S. Markey, President and CEO of Visiting Nurse Associations of America.

“Visiting Nurses created home healthcare more than 100 years ago, so no one is more experienced when it comes to delivering compassionate and cost-effective home care. Lifeline’s personal emergency medical response is a service we frequently recommend to people who wish to continue to live independently for as long as they can.”

According to the Department of Health & Human Services Administration on Aging (AoA) the older population–persons 65 years or older–numbered 35.9 million in 2003 representing 12.3% of the U.S. population, about one in every eight Americans. By 2030, there will be about 71.5 million older persons, which will account for 20% of the population.

“Many of us have loved ones who are elderly and it is often difficult to both know and admit that they might need the additional assistance and security of a medical alarm,” commented Yasmin Mheiny, a Lifeline System’s expert specializing in occupational therapy and needs of the elderly. “Lifeline is the first to create a unique, comprehensive tool to help caregivers deal with a sensitive topic that is often met with resistance and one which they may have been avoiding or just not certain how best to address.”

With the simple press of a waterproof button, at any time of the day or night, the user is quickly connected with a highly trained Lifeline Personal Response Associate. The Associate makes voice contact through the Lifeline speakerphone, reviews the individual’s personal and medical profile, assesses her situation and then notifies a family member, neighbor, or appropriate support and medical response team as the situation requires.

Lifeline personal response and support services offer:

? Immediate response by caring and highly-trained Personal Response Associates —24 hours a day/365 days a year.

? State-of-the-art equipment made by Lifeline.

? Lightweight, waterproof personal help button that can be worn as a pendant or on the wrist.

? CarePartner Telephone option with larger number buttons and personalized reminders to help manage medications, diet, exercise and appointments.

? No minimum service commitment, all at a cost of little more than a dollar a day.

1. Why use a medical alarm system?

At sometime in life, whether it's your mom, dad, aunt, uncle, family, or a friend... life can become difficult.

Mom could fall and not be able to call for help. Aunt Tillie's arthritis could flare up not allowing her to get out of the tub. Dad could slip in the shower and not have a Button to push for help. Uncle Joe could have a heart attack and not have a Button to push to get help.

Most of our family members, or us, wait until an emergency occurs before getting a medical alert device. Some refuse to use a system even after their first incident and therefore have the same fall, heart attack, stroke, breathing difficulty... or whatever kind of threat... yet again... with no way to summon help…because the can't reach the phone for help to dial 911.

Here's the problem. Once a senior has fallen and waited hours for help to find them…they lose a portion of their self-confidence. By the time someone has fallen multiple times without immediate help…they start to become a different person…they become frail and sometimes afraid.

The best time to protect a loved one with a medical alert device is prior to any problem. I have become a young senior myself and I now stay safe with my own Button. It's the smart thing to do.

A loved one can remain living independently in their own home far longer by having a Button to push that will get them help when they need it most.

2. What is the problem with DSL, Wireless Jacks, Splitters and Voice over IP Internet phones?

In a nutshell, all of these devices make medical alerts at times inconsistent. There are still some companies out there that claim their medical devices work fine with DSL.

DSL works just fine most of the time. It’s one out of a hundred or so times that you push the button that trouble occurs. Sometimes the trouble is simply too much noise imposed on the phone line by DSL, which usually results in a medical alarm signal received, but does not let the central monitoring station to switch to voice communication.

The secondary problem with DSL is the same problem that splitters... sometimes they malfunction... in failing they cause the medical alarm not to be able to communicate with the monitoring center.

I have never found a 100% quality connection with DSL. To test and see the inconsistency push your button at least 100 to 200 times and voice-to-voice communicate with the monitoring center.

Wireless jacks introduce noise on the phone too... they are just unpredictable.

No medical alarm device should ever be hooked up to Voice over IP (Internet phones). No doubt, the telephone long distance rate is great. We use Voice over IP phones to connect our offices in Santa Barbara, Maui, Kentucky and Los Angeles. We need a landline for backup because 10% of the time noise is so loud on the line, we must switch off VOIP. Switching to a landline is easy technology for our offices. In your home, when you need help the most, you could be in trouble. Beyond that noise problem... Internet connections are never reliable.

Solution:

If you are concerned about getting help consistently during an emergency...DON'T USE ANY OF THESE DEVICES in the telephone jack with your medical alarm system. The risk is simply too high. Keep it simple.

If you must use one of these devices, a separate phone number (a separate phone line) for any medical alarm system or medical alert device is the best solution.

Hint: Cable modems provide better speeds than DSL for Internet connection and they don't interfere with medical alarms. Dial up connection will work fine…it's just much slower.
