Biometric time clocks are state of the art identity time clocks that require employees to scan their fingerprint to punch in and punch out of work. Biometric time clocks use fingerprint recognition technology to ensure that only authorized individuals are gaining access to specific areas, and also that employees are at work for the duration they are expected to be. Traditional card punch time clocks are vulnerable to what is commonly known as buddy punching, the practice of one individual punching another persons time card for them in order to give the impression of them having been at the workplace.
With the use of fingerprints to identify individuals comings and goings from a workplace, or access to a controlled area, Biometric time clocks are fool proof. Since every individual's fingerprints are unique, biometric time clocks eliminate employee time clock fraud. The companies on this page are some of the most innovative leaders in the industry.

Biometric Timeclocks
Unitime's HandPunch biometric timeclocks provide the most accurate data collection solution available by ensuring that employees must be present in order to record a punch. HandPunch biometric timeclocks bring the flexibility of a full-function time and attendance terminal together with the sophistication of the most accurate identification technology available. Using field-proven hand geometry biometric technology, HandPunch terminals scan the size and shape of your employees' hands to verify their identities each time they punch. No fingerprints or palm prints are utilized.
HandPunch biometric timeclocks are installed at convenient locations throughout a facility to make it easy for employees to clock in. Punching is performed using biometric hand scans, and the resulting transactions are periodically uploaded to the host PC running the UNITIME Automated Timekeeping System. The patented hand geometry technology utilized by HandPunch timeclocks offers a number of important advantages:
> Unparalleled accuracy and reliability
> Eliminates the expense and hassle of card-based systems
> Fast, easy enrollment and use
> Easily networked
> Improved security, accuracy, speed, and convenience
Improved Payroll Accuracy
HandPunch biometric timeclocks greatly improve payroll accuracy by eliminating "buddy-punching," the practice of employees punching in or out for other employees who aren’t at work. Not only does this reduce labor costs and the time required to prepare payroll, but it also gives supervisors more time to focus on their jobs instead of watching clocks, thereby increasing efficiency and profitability.
Identity Verification and Access Control
According to the Transportation Security Administration, HandPunch hand geometry is the only biometric technology that has proven to be effective for employee access control at airports. Several HandPunch timeclock models support door access control, so when connected to electronic door switches these terminals provide a fail-safe method of ensuring that each person who gains entry is not simply carrying someone else’s access card. If the biometric scan of a person’s hand is not recognized, a HandPunch terminal will not unlock a door. In addition, an employee’s schedule may be used to restrict access to specific days and times. Several HandPunch models also support schedules for ringing electronic shop bells at predefined times. From coast-to-coast and around the world, HandPunch biometric timeclocks are easing concerns and boosting security by ensuring that the people on-site actually belong there.

Dresser Wayne Saves $20,000 in Payroll Costs Using Biometric Handreaders
Retail Solutions Manufacturer Sees Yearly Savings Add Up After Installing Biometric Time and Attendance Solution
CAMPBELL, CALIF. – Sept. 1, 2005 – Recognition Systems, the biometric component of Ingersoll-Rand’s (IR) Security Technologies, announced today that retail solutions manufacturer Dresser Wayne is using its biometric HandReaders to track the time and attendance for 400 hourly employees at its facility in Austin, Texas, resulting in annual payroll savings of $20,000.
HandReaders automatically take a three-dimensional reading of the size and shape of a hand and verify the user’s identity in less than one second. Biometric readers eliminate the need for an employee to carry a badge, thus eliminating the problem of lost or forgotten badges. Biometric time clocks also eliminate “buddy punching,” the practice of employees clocking in and out for each other. They also provide more accurate information about who is working and when and help a company eliminate intentional or unintentional mistakes. Plus, not having hourly employees fill in their time each pay period results in visible cost savings.
“It is a very secure system that provides accurate information about who has worked, and for how long," said Chris Walter, manufacturing systems engineer. "It doesn’t sound like much when you look at it from one person’s time savings. But give back 10-15 minutes per employee to the manufacturing process every two-week period—and reduce the time the team captains have to review the numbers from an hour to 30 minutes—and we achieve an annual savings of a little more than $20,000."
Manufacturing costs are directly affected by the productivity of employees. With its 400 workers spread across four buildings at the Austin facility, Walter needed a more efficient method of collecting time and attendance records and readying the information for payroll.
Before installing the biometric solution, hourly employees completed paper timesheets, signing in and out each day. At the end of the pay period, employees had to complete paperwork and give it to their team leaders for verification prior to entering it into the payroll system. This process took about 15 minutes per worker—time that could be better spent on the manufacturing process.
In early 2000, Dresser Wayne started searching for a solution to eliminate the manual process. Legiant, a privately held company based in Austin, Texas, that specializes in the development of web-based time and attendance tracking solutions, introduced Wayne to its biometric solution.
“Biometric time clocks are very accurate,” said Walter. “We tried to spoof the system with someone else’s hand similar in size to mine but the system would not accept it. It is a very secure system that provides accurate information about who has worked and for how long.”
The Legiant Timecard system offers all the features Dresser Wayne needed for its manufacturing facility. It easily implements the rules for labor collection and supports rules that allows the company to allocate time for 15 minutes in the morning and afternoon for breaks that could be charged directly to overhead, not a product. This enables Dresser Wayne to track its labor efficiencies accurately and develop efficiency reports for accounting.
Plus, the system can compare the amount of labor used to manufacture a product against the forecasted costs to make certain the numbers balance. This information helps the company plan its hiring, track overtime usage, and determine the output per person in each area.
Another of the benefits of the Legiant biometric-based timecard system at Dresser Wayne is that the HandReader biometric clocks work over the company’s Ethernet network, which eliminated the expense of having to install new wire.
Wayne’s relationship with Legiant is another benefit of the solution.
“They provided training for our team leaders and supervisors responsible for reviewing and approving the electronic timecards. Now they are working with us to ensure our Legiant solution works with our new Oracle payroll system.”
With over 100,000 hand geometry units throughout the world reading millions of hands each day, Recognition Systems, founded in 1986, is the pioneer and only manufacturer of the leading two biometric technologies, hand geometry and finger scan. HandReaders handle any population volume with ease while providing impeccable reliability. With dramatically lower false reject and failure to enroll rates than other biometric technologies, the value of HandReaders grows as the number of users and/or transactions increases. They are recommended for outdoor applications.
